Sleek Contemporary Metallic (Pewter Video included)
A great paint recipe for those looking to create a luxe modern contemporary look . The Metallic Creme is highly reflective creating a beautiful pewter finish paired with Carbon Black making it sleek, chic and completely bespoke. The drawers have been painted in Carbon Black with Clear Wax whilst the frames and handles in the Artisan Metallic Creme.
What you will need: (sized subject to the type of project)
Carbon Black Premium Chalk Paint
Pewter Metallic Creme
Artisan Clear wax
Staalmeester Series 2020 Pro hybrid size 18
Series 1060 Spalter brush
Series 3600 Natural bristle brush
Method
Painting:
Paint and feather 1 coat of Carbon Black Premium Chalk Paint in all directions. With your size 18 brush, make sure you load the paint on generously, then spread, take the pressure of your paint brush and feather and flatten the brush strokes while wet. Apply 1-2 coats until you achieve full coverage
Once dry lightly sand any unnatural textures using 240 grit sandpaper until you are happy with the level of texture on it, note: when you sand Carbon Black it will scuff to light grey colour, this will disappear once you apply your wax.
Waxing:
In sections with your Staalmeester natural bristle brush, apply the Artisan Clear wax brushing in all directions, lightly wipe away the excess wax with a lint-free rag as you go. Ensuring you only wax the areas that will remain black, don't wax the areas in which you plan to highlight in Pewter as the metallic creme will need to be applied straight onto the raw (unwaxed) premium chalk paint.
Metallic Creme:
Using your Spalter brush, pick up your Pewter Metallic Creme and brush out on your chosen areas (over the carbon black) where you would like to enhance it with Pewter, as your applying take the pressure off your brush to feather and blend any visible brushstrokes for a more flawless finish.
Once dry, apply your second coat of Pewter Metallic Creme to your selected areas.
TIP:
Spalter brushes are designed to work in with our Metallic Alchemy range and are available in different sizes to allow you to create beautiful, flawless metallic finishes.
You can also apply this method to any handles or hardware you want to update.

Coastal Grey Blues
This paint finish evokes a beautiful fusion of both strength and calm. Soft and moody, we picture this restful paint finish sitting in a little beach shack along the coast. Sitting underneath the beautiful depth of the Carbon Black coloured wax are the soft and moody blues of Stormy Creek and Hokitika Gorge. The combination of these lovely colours would also look great as a textured rustic finish.
What you will need: (sizes dependant on the project)
Stormy Creek Premium Chalk Paint
Hokitika Gorge Premium Chalk Paint
Carbon Black Premium Chalk Paint
Artisan Clear wax
Artisan Dark wax
Staalmeester size 18 brush
Natural bristle brush
Lint-free rags
Optional: gold or silver gilding wax
Method
Painting:
Paint in all directions with your Stormy Creek Chalk Paint using a Staalmeester Series 2020 Pro hybrid size 18 brush. Loading the paint on your brush generously then spreading out the paint out.
Once dry if a second coat is required apply the second coat by brushing in all directions in areas that need filling.
Once dry, lightly sand any unnatural textures ensuring you allow the brush strokes and subtle texture to remain.
Coloured Waxing:
With a little bit of Artisan dark wax on your natural bristle brush, in sections, brush in all directions over the top of your Stormy Creek paint finish. Gently wipe off the excess Clear wax with a lint-free rag.
Hokitika Gorge Coloured wax:
Mix your Artisan Clear wax and Hokitika Premium Chalk Paint in a 1:1 ratio of strength. Pick up a small amount on your natural bristle brush and apply it in sections in the areas you wish to highlight. Gently wipe off the excess wax with your lint-free rag and continue onto the next section.
Carbon Black Coloured wax:
Use the mixing ratio as stated above to mix your coloured wax. Pick up a small amount on your natural bristle brush, brush out in the corners and details to create shadowing, age and depth, lightly blending out as you go, to create further depth and mood.

Metallic French Elegance
A beautiful metallic finish with a complex look and depth made easy with The Artisan Metallic Alchemy range, creating a sophisticated metallic finish with depth, interest and character.
What you will need
1 Litre Imperial Linen Premium Chalk Paint
1 Finley metallic gold glaze, 1 Luna Lustre metallic glaze
Artisan Dark Wax
Metallic Gold gilding wax (optional)
Method
Painting:
Paint 2 coats of Imperial Linen with a Staalmeester Series 2020, Pro hybrid size 18
brush paint in all directions, loading generously then spread the paint out. On the second coat brush in all directions in areas that need filling.
Once dry lightly sand any unnatural textures ensuring you allow the brush strokes and subtle texture to remain
Metallic Glazes :
Luna Lustre :
Brush on your Luna Lustre Glaze over your Imperial Linen, remember that the more you pick up on your brush the more "playtime" you will have. Brush the glaze backwards and forwards over Imperial Linen with your Spalter brush until covered/ even. At this point is should provide a beautiful shimmer over your project.
Finley Gold Glaze:
Brush over your Finley Gold glaze backwards and forwards to give it some air time, do this in sections (eg: an entire drawer) then lightly rag with a lint free rag which will make it dry almost instantly. By ragging you will be able to see the luna Lustre through the Finley gold. Steel wool if you want to see more of the Luna Lustre or if you want to enhance the texture before it completely sets
Detail & Enhance
If you would like to provide some age to the look, apply dark wax in corners and areas where you would like a patina and lightly wipe and blend with a lint free rag. This will stain both metallic glazes.
(optional) Enhance further by running gold gilding wax along fine edges and bevels
TIP: The more glaze you pick up on your brush the more "play time" you will have. The less you pick up the less "playtime" therefore pick up an amount on your brush that is suitable for the section you are doing.
Spalter brushes are designed to work in with our metallic glazes and are available in different sizes to allow you to create beautiful flawless metallic looks
If you prefer a more refined look solid metallic look, leave out the steel wool process, as this will provide a slightly worn metallic look as well as enhance the subtle texture on the piece.

Luxuriously Textured & Rustic
Dark and Moody, textured and rustic is this recipe, great for creating that feature character piece. A great recipe for those stand-alone pieces like a sideboard, hall table or something you want to add a bit of character and charm too.
What you will need
1 Litre Carbon Black Premium Chalk Paint
1 Litre Potters Clay
Artisan Clear Wax
Artisan Dark Wax
Metallic Gold gilding wax (optional)
Method
Painting:
Paint 1-2 coats of Potters Clay with a Staalmeester Pure Bristle brush, load generously and vigorously brush the paint in all directions, then as the paint is drying come back and brush over again as you go to create lots of rustic texture and leave to dry
Water down the Carbon Black by approx 10-15% then lightly brush over the coat of Potters Clay (this doesn't need to be full coverage) A thin layer of Carbon Black is all you need. Leave to dry.
Lightly sand selected areas with 240 grit sandpaper to bring out the underlying texture and Potters Clay. Only gentle pressure is required as there is only a thin layer of Carbon Black, focus on areas where it would naturally wear like corners and edges.
Waxes :
Apply dark wax in sections and wipe with lint free rag.
Mix your coloured wax Approx 1:1 Artisan Clear wax with Carbon Black and brush over in areas to detail, darken and shadow
Enhance:
Detail and Enhance with Metallic Glide in Forgotten Gold on edges (optional)
TIP: Ensure there is a nice layer of Potters Clay before you move onto the Carbon Black. The beauty of this finish is nothing is even and everything is imperfectly perfect so allow yourself to get creative. If at anytime you have sanded too much Carbon Black back, just reapply your diluted Carbon Black over the areas. This will blend back perfectly given the rustic nature of this finish. This finish balances itself beautifully with a touch of gold.
